This is a message sent to us from a company in Cork E.I.L. Would you be interested?
Every year we have a number of American groups in Killarney. They
stay at the International Hotel and have various sightseeing as well
as educational talks etc while they are there. As part of Road
Scholar's and also our ethos of 'hands on learning' and having a
more authentic travel experience, we arrange family dinners with
local host families on one of the evenings they are in Killarney.
The meal itself is not the primary focus of the visit - it is more
about interaction and getting the feeling of being in an Irish
family home. It is very important that at least one of the family
members eats with the visitors. It has proven very successful in
other host communities and we would love to try it in Killarney.
What has worked in the past is when families cook a 'typical' Irish
meal like Irish stew or bacon and cabbage, although of course this
is not necessary, whatever they like to cook for their own family is
fine.
In terms of the profile of people, they are all over 55, with the
average age being late sixties, early seventies. They are generally
in very good heath and are very interested in Irish culture. They
often tend to be retired teachers, social workers or public
servants. Families in other host communities tend to find them easy
to chat to and get along with.
