We can offer a specially arranged course for you and any child between the age of 3 and 17.  Parents and small children (between the ages of 3 and 12) will be based in the Muckross School while any teenagers (between the ages of 13 and 17) will be based in Lisivigeen National School, a newly refurbished premises on the outskirts of Killarney.  This course will enable you to develop your own language skills while improvin gthose of your children and provide them with wonderful life-enhancing experiences in a different culture.  Crèche facilities are also available locally if you have a child younger than three.

Children's courses:

We offer 2 programmes.

GE1: 15 hours per week school in the mornings. We concentrate on encouraging communication. The focus of the course, as you can imagine, is different from teen and adults. There is more focus on communication and creativity (drawings songs play etc.) The cost is €250 per week.

GE3:    15 hours per week school in the mornings plus afternoon activities. We run a specific activity programme for the children alone during the summer. Activities include: swimming, visiting pet and sheep farms, horse riding, Irish dancing, drama, arts and crafts, boat trips on the lake. Adults can accompany the children on these activities if they wish provided they inform the secretary in advance and pay the cost of any additional entrance fees. It must be noted though that most of these activities would not be suitable for adults and there is adequate supervision by Killarney School of English staff on all activities. The activity programme also includes a day trip every Saturday which is the same as that on the adult activity programme. Because of health and safety regulations it is important that parents accompany any child under the age of 12. The cost is €400 per week.

Children’s Classrooms:

The children’s area can be found to the rear of the main building in which the parents are taught. This ‘kids’ Zone’ consists of 5 classrooms with a performance area, picnic tables and large play area.

Testing and Levels:

As with the parents, children will be asked to complete a short written test before their arrival at the school. This will enable us to put them in the appropriate level. During the first morning the teacher will assess their level again through spoken interaction. If the teacher feels that the child is in the wrong level, a decision can be made in conjunction with the children’s coordinator, director of the school and parents to move them up or down a level.

Four levels are available:

Starter: This level is mainly for the 3-5 year age range who have little or no English and can only cope with rudimentary vocabulary.

Beginner: This level is mainly for the 6-7 age range who again have little or no English but have the ability to learn more advanced sets of vocabulary and very basic grammatical structures.

Elementary: This level is mainly for the 8-9 age range who already have a fair vocabulary base for everyday topics and a grasp of certain grammatical structures such as the present simple tense.

Pre-intermediate: This level is mainly for the 10-12 age range who have a good vocabulary base for everyday topics and some knowledge of different tenses such as the present, past and future tenses.

Adult courses:

  • GE1: General English 15 hours per week. €250 per week.
  • GE2: General English 30 hours per week €500 per week. Classes in the afternoon are significantly smaller than in the mornings.
  • GE3 General English 15 hours per week plus activities in the afternoons and a day trip on Saturday.

Accommodation.

  • A host family where we would find a family with a large house and children of similar ages. Therefore, they will have friends when they arrive this will decrease homesickness and make the transition easier. We encourage the Irish children to introduce their European guests to their friends as this increases exposure to English. You will have excellent full board accommodation with single room, breakfast, packed lunch and evening meals 7 days per week. All families have been carefully selected. All homes are modern and comfortable. We have built great relationships with the families and they will do everything to make your stay more comfortable. You will experience the warmth and friendliness of an Irish home. The price is €200 per week. However there is a very limited supply of these families and they work on a ‘first come first served’ basis. Also in order for an Irish family to host a foreign family a large house is necessary. Most of these houses are outside the town centre. More details are available at http://www.ksoe.com/en_page_05_49.html

  • Self-catering:  There is a map of Killarney which shows the locations. You can make the booking directly or we can make it for you, whichever you prefer. One word of warning, many of these get booked very quickly and early in the year (especially for mid July to mid August, so we would advise an early booking)
