Review of the Gap of Dunloe

The Gap of Dunloe is one of the most highly recommended tours by guidebooks and locals of Killarney. It is worth doing in order to see the stunning variety of landscapes and views of the area.

The Gap is a narrow pass between the Macgillycuddy Reeks and the Purple Mountains near Killarney. This spectacular V-shaped valley was formed two million years ago by giant, slow moving ice.

The trip is circular and can be done from either direction but the best way to do it is by taking a boat from Ross Castle. On the boat you will travel through the three Lakes of Killarney before stopping to have lunch at Lord Brandon’s Cottage. From here you will walk through the Black Valley where there is quite a challenging climb to the peak. After this you will begin walking downhill before finishing at Kate Kearney’s Cottage. This is a traditional pub which serves the best Irish Coffees in town! The walking distance of the trip is approximately 11km. If you are feeling tired you can hire a horse and cart along the way!

This picturesque trip takes you from the lush, fertile and almost tropical landscape of Killarney into the harsh and rocky landscape of the Gap of Dunloe. Be prepared for an active day and don’t forget your camera!
