The symbol of Killarney is the
Jaunting Car. The Jaunting car is driven
by the Jarvey who knows everything about Killarney!
Before the advent of the car, Jaunting Cars would have been the
only means of transport in Ireland. In Killarney they have been
preserved and you can find them at the entrance at the entrance
to the National Park and also in the centre of Killarney town.
For a fee they will take you on a variety of routes through the
25,000 acre Killarney National Park visting the Knockreer &
Muckross estates - stopping at Ross Castle and/or Muckross
House. The drive takes you along by the Killarney Lakes using
routes exclusive to the Jaunting Cars - no motor traffic is
allowed in the National Park.
The
trips vary in time dependant upon your personal requirements and
can be from half an hour to half a day. The Jaunting car drivers
are call jarveys and have a local knowledge second to none.
Children of all ages delight in a Jaunting Car trip - something
the family can enjoy together. A Jaunting Car trip is an
absolute must if you visit Killarney - you are guaranteed the
finest scenery and beauty spots in ireland.
